Gigi & John’s engagement photos were so fun to document! This laid back couple opted to start out at their house in East Nashville with the plan to just snap a few on their front porch. The light wasn’t working for me so I peeked inside and was pleasantly surprised with the cutest sunroom. We grabbed a few there and on the couch and I’m so glad we did because they turned out to be some of the couple’s favorite moments!
Next we hit Shelby Park since it’s where they frequent with their pup. Always love shooting at places you actually go.
BTS tidbits: Working with animals can be tricky but I’ve found it’s best to let the dogs roam around for a bit to get out their excitement and energy. During this time I’m grabbing a few candids and planning out where I want to put the couple for the staged shots. From here I set my couple up and let the dog come in and out as it chooses, telling the couple it’s okay if the dog isn’t in all of them. When the dog does come in the frame we’re already set up, and I encourage the couple to play with the dog and not worry about everyone & the dog looking at the camera. If a leash is necessary it’s not the worst idea to bring a companion to take the dog off our hands between some shots, but I usually suggest doing 1/2 of the session with the pup and 1/2 without so you can really focus on each other which is the point of engagement photos, right?!
And probably my favorite part of this session was ending at Gigi & John’s favorite local restaurant and an East Nashville staple: Lockeland Table. If you haven’t been, you’re missing out. Especially on the pictured $5 pizza during happy hour!
